Spartanburg, SC - July 23rd, 2018 - Chapman Cultural Center awarded three High School students the Mary Wheeler Davis Scholarship, which is a component fund of The Spartanburg County Foundation. The scholarship is awarded annually to students of Spartanburg County who are pursuing undergraduate degrees in the visual or performing arts. This year’s recipients are Natalie Long, Lauren Russell and Olivia Woodall.
Long, a student of Oakbrook Prep, received a scholarship of $1,500 and plans to study dance at University of South Carolina. Woodall, who attends Oakbrook Prep, and Russell from Spartanburg High School, were both awarded a scholarship of $750. Woodall is pursuing a Musical Theater BFA and a career in acting while Russell plans to study digital art with ambitions of working in animation.
“I decided I wanted to major in dance when I realized that no major could bring me anywhere near as much happiness and fulfillment,” said Long. “My career goal is to dance commercially. The commercial dance industry is extremely competitive and I think majoring in dance will help me improve upon my foundation.”
With the cost of tuition consistently rising, the Mary Wheeler Davis Scholarship helps create more opportunities for students in Spartanburg County to receive an education in the arts. “The cost of education has risen sharply,” said Woodall. “This scholarship helps me tremendously defray the cost of my education.”
“My top choice for school is SCAD and I plan on entering the animation program. Although, I have been accepted to SMC and Converse College,” said Russell. “But, no matter what, I plan to graduate from SCAD and fulfill my dreams of going into the animation industry.”
Applications for the Mary Wheeler Davis Scholarship are accepted by Chapman Cultural Center. One scholarship of at least $1,000 is usually awarded. The selection is based on student character, financial need, and artistic potential. The scholarships are awarded based on the recommendations of a panel of community leaders with interest and expertise in the visual and performing arts.
Mary Wheeler Davis felt her purpose in life was to improve the quality of life for others, especially to enhance the artistic and cultural environment of all citizens of Spartanburg County. The family of Mary Wheeler Davis created a special trust as a memorial to her to be devoted primarily to the promotion of the arts in Spartanburg County by means of scholarships for studies in the performing and visual arts.
