The Children’s Museum of The Upstate Appoints Michelle Shain as Interim President and CEO

GREENVILLE, SC – August 6, 2018 – Long-time community leader Michelle Shain has been named interim President and CEO of The Children’s Museum of the Upstate.

A former City Councilwoman who was instrumental in the many of positive changes in Greenville during her eight years as an at-large member, Shain will help ensure a smooth transition at the executive level of the museum as the Board of Directors continues a national search for the museum’s next president and CEO. She replaces Nancy Halverson who served as TCMU’s CEO for six years before leaving in July.

Shain has led various Upstate non-profit organizations and educational institutions, serving as the former director of community relations for Furman University, executive director of Greenville County First Steps, and vice president of the Greenville Community Foundation.

She most recently served as interim executive director for A Child's Haven as well as interim executive director for the YWCA of Greenville and interim president of the Community Foundation of Greenville.

Chris Beard, TCMU’s board chairman, said Shain’s experience in working with transition teams coupled with her years of service to the community make her an excellent choice.

“Our community can continue to expect a lot of exciting changes from TCMU, including exhibit renovations and a ten-year anniversary celebration next year,” Beard said. “Michelle’s leadership during this transition period will help us continue the momentum around the museum’s vision, growth, and strategic planning initiatives.”

Shain has long been a supporter of the museum and believes she can help facilitate a strong transition between Halverson’s work and the future CEO.

“The mission and values of TCMU resonate deeply with my commitment to the Greenville community and Upstate children,” she said. “It’s an honor to be joining the museum, and I look forward to working with the board, staff, and local community to help TCMU live out its mission during the transition.”
