Greenville Jewish Federation participates in Advocacy Day

Leadership of the Greenville Jewish Federation took part in a day of advocacy in Columbia at the State House on March 6th.

Rep. Beth Bernstein read a pro-Israel resolution, condemning Hamas, followed by the House and gallery standing in a show of support for Israel. Representatives from Secure Communities Network (SCN), ACLU and the ADL participated. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, State Rep. Wendell Gilliard and Sen. Larry Grooms each gave time to the group as part of the SC Jewish Advocacy Day at the State House.

“The goal of Jewish Advocacy Day is to help our lawmakers understand the threats the Jewish community in South Carolina faces and the importance of legislative action to recognize antisemitism and hate crimes,” Tessler said. “Our work isn’t over after Advocacy Day, as we will continue to encourage the Jewish community to engage with their elected officials and be heard.”

Amanda Herlihy Named GSA Business Report’s 2024 Woman of Influence Honoree

Amanda Herlihy, executive director of the SC Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities Foundation, was named a 2024 Woman of Influence by GSA Business Report. This honor is bestowed upon Upstate businesswomen who are reaching inspiring heights in their careers and providing inspirational examples by giving back to the community. Nominations for the award are submitted annually by businesses, organizations and individuals.

A native of Cortlandt Manor, New York, Herlihy holds a bachelor’s degree in fine and performing arts and arts management from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She began working at the Governor’s School in 2018 as the director of development. She served as the interim executive director and was named executive director in June 2023. Herlihy has been instrumental in raising funds to support arts education across the state.

Relationship building has been Herlihy’s passion, and in the Greenville community, she has served on the board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Piedmont Chapter since 2021 in various roles, including vice president of membership, vice president of communications, and mentorship chair. Herlihy is also a member of the Rotary Club of Greenville and serves as the Association Health Plan Trustee for Together SC.

New DOL Rule in Effect March 11, 2024. Is your business compliant? Don’t Pay Double for your Independent Contractors

GREENVILLE, SC – Area businesses which rely on independent contractors should note the US Department of Labor’s recently adopted a new six-factor test for determining worker classification under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which narrows the definition of who is an independent contractor. This new rule goes into effect on March 11, 2024.

The six factors to consider when determining a worker’s status are:

1. Opportunity for profit or loss depending on managerial skill;
2. Investments by the worker and the potential employer;
3. Degree of permanence of the work relationship;
4. Nature and degree of control;
5. Extent to which the work performed is an integral part of the potential employer’s business; and
6. Skill and initiative.

The Department of Labor has said that these factors are not exhaustive. Instead, the analysis uses a totality-of-the-circumstances “economic reality” approach, which allows consideration of other relevant, but unenumerated, factors that “in some way indicate whether the worker is in business for themself.” Where the worker is dependent on the employer for work, they will not qualify as an independent contractor under this rule.

Misclassifying workers can mean serious consequences for employers, including:
• Owing double the worker’s damages
• Paying the other side’s attorney’s fees and costs
• Individual liability – you’re not shielded by the corporation– for individuals who had a hand in the misclassification; and
• To the extent a settlement is reached, the agreement itself—and the amounts paid—is public information.
• (And this list doesn’t include IRS and/or DOL penalties.)

USC School of Medicine Greenville Holds David A. Wilson, MD Innovations in Medicine Lectureship

USC School of Medicine Greenville holds its 2024 David A. Wilson, MD Innovations in Medicine Lecture Series March 26 with Jeffery S. Mogil, PhD., presenting an overview of his research titled, “Sex Differences in Pain Throughout the Lifespan.” Dr. Mogil will discuss how men and women experience pain differently, citing examples of research indicating divergent experiences based on sex.

As the E.P. Taylor Chair of Pain Studies at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, Mogil’s behavioral neuroscience research seeks to better understand the nervous system mechanisms that mediate and inhibit pain perception. In addition to this research and teaching, Mogil serves as the Canada Research Chair in Genetics of Pain (Tier 1).

The Wilson Distinguished Lecture series highlights advancements in medicine, engages local community members and draws national attention to the professional advancement occurring at Greenville’s medical school. The series recognizes Dr. David A. Wilson, the first board-certified general surgeon in Greenville. Dr. Wilson initiated the accreditation of surgical training at Greenville Health System (now Prisma Health) and developed innovative contributions to the surgical treatment of tuberculosis.

Greenville Mayor Knox White recently honored Dr. David Wilson’s wife, Ruth Wilson Nicholson, in a proclamation declaring Feb. 3 as the School of Medicine Greenville Day of the Woman for her contributions to the growth of educational opportunities for nurse practitioners.
