West Main Artists Co-op To Host Day of Demos, Tours
Inviting the public to see how local art is made, West Main Artists Co-op will host “Studio Saturday” December 1 as part of its all-members “Open Doors” art exhibit. From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., the non-profit arts agency will have about two dozens of its member artists scattered throughout the 20,000-square-foot building, giving demonstrations of how art is produced. Artists will demonstrate different types of painting: oil, acrylic, watercolor and encaustics. Several artists will be working in clay, demonstrating techniques from miniature making to wheel throwing. Raku firing will be in progress on the back patio from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Other artists will demonstrate metalsmithing, glass cutting for fused glass, polymer clay sculpture, leatherwork, and copper and gold leaf. In addition, there will be tours of the venue, holiday refreshments, and a 2 p.m. performance by Sparkle City Improv. Viewing this extensive exhibit of more than 1,000 works of arts, studio touring, demonstrations, and performances are all free. However, the Co-op has the largest collection of for-sale works of art in Spartanburg.
“Saturday will be a day full of local art,” Committee Chair Nancy Williamson said. “It will be a great educational opportunity to see how the work is made and see the diverse and abundant creative talent we have in Spartanburg. It will be very casual and welcoming. New works of art by our members are grouped and scattered throughout the building, and many of our members will be here to meet and greet and to actually let people see how art is made. And, for people looking to buy unique and affordable Christmas gifts, we have the largest collection in the county -- everything from paper bookmarks with iconic Spartanburg images to gallery-quality mixed-media sculptures. We have extensive offerings of pottery and fused glass, along with jewelry, handcrafted leather handbags, photographs, paintings, and more. West Main Artists Co-op has been around for about 10 years, but not everyone understands what we do. This open studio event offers the opportunity for the public to come in and get to know us and for us to show our neighbors what we are about. It should be fun for all of us."
West Main Artists Co-op is located at 578 West Main St., Spartanburg. Normal business hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and exhibit viewing is always free. For more information, please visit online: WestMainArtists.org.
