SPARTANBURG, SC – During the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Organization's (NAHRO) Online National Conference & Exhibition, NAHRO honored the 52 housing and community development agencies who will receive 182 Awards of Merit for a wide range of affordable housing and community development programs. These forward-thinking solutions to local housing issues include beautifully designed buildings, resident services, employment and work skills development programs, public-private partnerships, innovative design projects, and more. “This year’s award winners showcase our members’ creativity and hard work as they continue to meet the needs of their local communities,” NAHRO Interim CEO Mike Gerber said. “As the global pandemic continues to upend lives across this country, the exceptional work of housing agencies is unrelenting. We hope these innovative projects inspire others as they seek to solve local challenges.”

The Prince Hall Homework Club won a 2021 Award of Merit in the Resident and Client Services Category. In September 2020, Spartanburg Housing started Homework Club to assist children who lived in the Prince Hall Apartments during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Due to ongoing communication with the local school districts and parents, we understood many students were having difficulties adjusting to virtual and hybrid learning”, said Cierra Fowler, Director of Resident Services and Community Services. Students were falling behind on assignments and not present during online classes. In response, Spartanburg Housing created a space in the Prince Hall community room to support students, twice a week for two hours where students could come for homework assistance. Due to the pandemic and CDC guidelines, they could only support 12 to 15 students while social distancing.

Shaunté Evans, Chief Executive Officer, said “We are humbly excited to receive this honor and recognition from NAHRO. We are thankful to our staff and community volunteers for their continued service to the Homework Club.”

Spartanburg Housing’s vision continues to surround impacting quality of life through housing by enhancing economic mobility for the families we serve, strengthening communities, and creating strategic partnerships.
