Spartanburg, SC - The Spartanburg Community College Foundation is excited to announce the establishment of a new endowed fund in memory of longtime education advocates, Putsy and John Wardlaw.
The founder and chairman of The Adult Learning Center, a non-profit organization serving high school dropouts, Wardlaw and his wife were instrumental in providing resources and opportunities for individuals to earn an education. They were dedicated to making the Spartanburg community a better place by supporting the Spartanburg County Foundation, the Episcopal Church of the Advent and many other organizations.
The purpose of this new fund is to provide emergency financial assistance to SCC students for situations such as loss of transportation, illness or loss of a job, allowing them to stay enrolled in classes and continue their educational journey.
"My parents loved Spartanburg and believed, without a doubt, that education was the key to everything. I've heard both of them say many times that a good education will produce successful people and every community needs productive and successful citizens. They, certainly, would not have wanted a temporary setback to disrupt someone's educational dreams," shared daughter, Saunders Wardlaw McCollum.
"There are times when Spartanburg Community College students find themselves in difficult situations while attending college, needing financial support outside of loans or scholarships to stay in school," said SCC Foundation Executive Director Bea Walters Smith. "We are very thankful to the Wardlaw family for this significant gift and appreciate their generosity."
