Since 1987, October has been designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Over the past 30+ years progress has been made to support domestic violence victims and survivors, to hold abusers accountable, and to create and update legislation to further those goals. Safe Harbor, a private non-profit serving four counties in the Upstate, offers ongoing support and training to its staff in keeping with its mission to provide a continuum of services to victims of domestic violence and their children, and to eliminate cultural acceptance of domestic violence through a coordinated community response, education, and prevention.
About 40 staff members from Safe Harbor’s shelters and other locations recently gathered for a half-day HeartMath® training session presented by Stacey Bevill, PCC, BCC, Owner and CEO of Golden Career Strategies. The training, which focused on building resiliency, qualified for required continuing education (CE) units.
“I was so impressed with the positive changes that my coaching clients experienced after learning HeartMath techniques, that I committed to becoming a trainer so that I could help more than 10 people at a time. I opted for the specialty track that included training to work with police, firemen and other first responders,” stated Bevill, a certified HeartMath trainer. “My first job after college was with Safe Harbor; so it was personally rewarding to come full circle and provide ‘The Resilience Advantage™ Skills for Personal and Professional Effectiveness’ course.”
For many years, South Carolina consistently ranked in the top 10 in an annual study, “When Men Murder Women,” released by the Violence Policy Center. The study ranks each U.S. state based on its rate of females killed by males. Based on this year’s study from 2020 data, South Carolina currently ranks #23 in the nation. This is the best ranking South Carolina has received in the history of this study (SC had consistently ranked among the top 10 for domestic violence). Our previous ranking based on 2019 data was #6.
“A 30 percent drop in the homicide rate is a hopeful shift for our state and for Safe Harbor,” says Samantha Tucker, Interim Co-Executive Director of Safe Harbor. “This news further fuels our efforts to provide effective services and to lead our community in creating a culture where all people feel safe and valued in their relationships.”
