René Sawyer of Greenville Technical College Among Ten Selected Nationwide for Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award

Award, in its 30th year, honors educators for work on behalf of first-year college students

René Sawyer of Greenville Technical College has been selected for the 2019 Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award presented by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina and Cengage Learning. Ten individuals have been chosen for their outstanding work on behalf of first-year students and for the impact their efforts have on the students and the culture of their institutions.

From teaching and curriculum development to policy and procedural changes, Sawyer has earned a reputation for leading initiatives that put students first. Recent initiatives include the scale-up of a success course for online learners and coordination of all college advising efforts with the success of students in mind.

Award recipients were recognized on Feb. 16 at the Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience in Las Vegas, NV.
