GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Reedy River Duck derby will have a new twist this year – it will be virtual rubber ducks going over the falls this July 11.
Rotary Club of the Reedy River Greenville announced today it plans to hold an online only version of the annual festival due to continued safety protocols over Covid-19, said Wendy Green, the service group’s president. More details on what that will entail will be announced soon.
“We know people love seeing the ducks in the water, but we also have to be responsible to the people of the Upstate,” Green said. “We are going to do a virtual derby this year in order to continue supporting local nonprofits because now more than ever, they need our help.”
Some of the groups supported last year include Early Act First Knight, Honduras Water Project, United Ministries, Girls on the Run, Mauldin Miracle League, the Cancer Survivors Park, Trees Upstate and many more.
People who already have purchased a duck adoption number, rest assured that number is still being entered into the race at 2:30 p.m. on July 11. A single duck adoption is $10, a five-duck “Quack Pack” is available for $30. Ducks can be adopted online at www.duckrace.com/greenville. Local Duck Adoption Teams earn a percentage of each duck adopted under their team name. To support a Duck Adoption team select the Team Tab at the top of the page.
First place winner receives Groceries for a Year from Publix, second place finisher gets $2,500 and third place wins a Golf Weekend at the Embassy Suites on Verdae, Green said. There are more than 30 prizes this year for entrees.
“We know the event will be different from what people have experienced in the past,” Green said. “But that doesn’t change our mission of supporting Upstate non-profit organizations that help families in the Upstate.”
