SPARTANBURG, SC - North Spartanburg Rotary Club recently presented Spartanburg Housing and Wofford College with a special IMAGINE Award Grant of $3,000, in honor of their after-school program’s 2022-23 focus, “Imagine.”

And, the After-School Program does just that – it supports students in the Highland and Southside neighborhoods with after-school homework help and with enrichment programming, like drama club and field days. Wofford College sustainability students, guided by Dr. Alysa M. Handelsman, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, contributed to the growth of last year’s programming; in particular, with the addition of arts-based curriculum. Cierra Kelly from Spartanburg Housing has served as Wofford students’ community partner since the initial phases of this program in January 2020.

This after-school programming provides one-on-one homework help and other after-school activities for elementary and middle school students living at the Prince Hall and Camp Croft housing developments, and “it’s a transformative experience for all of our students – from the second graders to the Wofford College sophomores. They are learning and growing together,” said Handelsman.

“Our Rotary Club is honored to help provide this grant to help ensure that the amazing Homework Club Program can continue to positively impact the lives of so many young students,” said Club President Ray Switzer.
