MAULDIN, SC – Produced by the City of Mauldin, SOOIE., Mauldin’s 10th Annual BBQ Festival showcases the heritage of the community through food and music. Hosted at the Mauldin Cultural Center’s Outdoor Amphitheater, the festival features more than 25 Cookers from all over the Southeast competing in a BBQ Cook-off judged by the South Carolina Barbeque Association (SCBA). Paired with live music and family fun, this can’t-miss festival is the perfect pig-out. SOOIE. will take place on Friday, September 18, 2020, 6-9 p.m. and Saturday, September 19, 2020, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
The City of Mauldin and the Mauldin Cultural Center are committed to the safety of our community. We will be implementing guidelines and changes to this year's event due to COVID-19. Staff, cookers, and volunteers will all be required to wear masks, and guests will be encouraged to wear masks when not eating. Guests are required to have their temperature taken at our check-in tents in the ticketing area and will be asked to agree to a waiver for this event. All information regarding the City of Mauldin’s COVID-19 protocols for this event can be found at mauldinbbq.com. Should it be unsafe to hold this event, it may be cancelled or postponed and an announcement will be posted on our website.
The festival opens Friday night with our Anything Butt competition, where participating cookers serve anything BUTT their BBQ to pique your tastebuds. Sliders, grilled chicken, smoked cobbler—the only way to know what’s cooking is to come try it for yourself. These food items will be judged by a guest panel, with special awards given to the winners during Saturday’s ceremony.
Since the Mauldin Cultural Center’s 2020 Beachin’ Fridays summer music series was cancelled, this year’s Cook-off will feature beach music sponsored by Duke Energy, with The Holiday Band performing on Friday. Friday will also end with a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by United Community Bank. Supporting sponsors for this year’s BBQ Cook-off include Servus Realty Group and Lending Path Mortgage.
Saturday features the main event, a BBQ Cook-off competition with a panel of certified BBQ Tasters from the SCBA. The public will also have a chance to cast their vote for the best BBQ and the winner of the Gabe Hunter People’s Choice Award. The Catalinas will perform live during Saturday’s event. Kids can enjoy fun activities and a petting zoo during both days of the event.
There were nine awards handed out in total for 2019’s competition. Friday’s Anything Butt Competition had winners in two categories. In the Sweet category, the winner was James Davila and his team The Saucy Pig BBQ. In Savory, the winner was Wayne Preston of Bucky’s Bar-B-Q.
There were four categories for last year’s Saturday event: the BBQ Cook-off, a Ribs competition, a Brisket competition, and People’s Choice. James Davila of The Saucy Pig BBQ won both the Brisket and Ribs competitions. The Gabe Hunter People’s Choice Award went to Chad Carter of Commando BBQ. Five winners took home awards for the main competition. From fifth to first place, the winners were Charles Holland of Back Alley BBQ; Jim Bennet of Smoke by Day, Fire by Night; James Davila of The Saucy Pig BBQ; Jeremy Smith of Piggy Fins; and in first place, Morris Gray & Josh Roberts of The Hog Mafia.
