Local Car Donations Assist Families In Treatment For Substance Use

GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA— Local non-profit, The Family Effect, felt the support of their community in a big way after receiving two separate car donations to benefit the clients and programs at The Phoenix Center, a treatment center for those struggling with substance use in the Upstate. Doug and Laura Raby decided it was time for a new family car and wanted their old car to have a meaningful impact. After hearing about The Family Effect from a friend who serves on their charitable board, rather than trading it in, they decided to donate their old car to Serenity Village, one of the programs supported by The Family Effect.

Doug and Laura’s car now serves as the main method of transportation for the ladies of the Lotus Program at Serenity Village. The women who are a part of this program have completed the three-month residential program at Serenity Place and have transitioned to living independently in villas on Serenity Village’s grounds. Transportation is one of the greatest barriers for mothers new to recovery and the women often struggled to get to work, outpatient treatment, the grocery store, and to meaningful outings with their children. Thanks to Doug and Laura (right/top), this barrier has been removed.

Chris Riordan (right/bottom) decided to donate his old vehicle after taking a tour of White Horse Academy, another program supported by The Family Effect. As the brother program to Serenity Village, White Horse Academy serves adolescent boys who have shown early warning signs of substance use disorders. After learning there was a young man who had no support from his family, he decided to give him a hand up and donate his car to him. From there, the young graduate of White Horse Academy was able to focus on other needs such as housing and employment.

Our clients are always in need of transportation. If you are interested in following Doug, Laura, and Chris’ lead and would like to donate a car, you will not only be removing a barrier for our clients in need, but you will also receive a charitable tax receipt.
