Legacy Early College Educator Named 2020-2021 District Teacher of the Year
COLUMBIA, S.C. (May 6, 2021) – Deion Jamison, a ninth and tenth grade English teacher at Legacy Early College in Greenville, S.C., has been named the 2020-2021 Public Charter School District Teacher of the Year.
The honoree is completing his fourth year as an educator and his second as a member of the faculty at Legacy Early College. He is a Teach for America Alumnus, a published author and a member of the National Council for Teachers of English, for which he received the 2020 Early Career Educator of Color Leadership Award. “Mr. Jamison embraces any opportunity for professional development, which makes him an outstanding teacher and an ideal leader,” said LaCheryl Smith, principal of Legacy Early College High School.
Jamison received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Clemson University and will receive his master’s degree in secondary education from Johns Hopkins University later this month. His teaching philosophy is centered around transformational teaching to elevate the unique perspectives of his students. “In transformational teaching, student voice is amplified, and learning becomes relevant, authentic and student-centered,” said Jamison.
Jamison was chosen from a rigorous and competitive interview process consisting of an application review conducted by internal staff and a virtual in-person interview completed by internal and external staff. The district received 13 applications from a pool of qualified candidates seeking to be selected as finalists for the honor. In April, five finalists were named for consideration to be named the district’s top teacher.
“Congratulations to Mr. Jamison on this high honor,” said Chris Neeley, superintendent of the Public Charter School District. “Your teammates at the district are proud of your resolve to connect with children and push them to excellence in all they do.”
