Hollingsworth Funds Announces New Board Appointee and Promotion of Tamela Spann

Greenville, SC – Hollingsworth Funds, a community-wide funder for Greenville County is pleased to announce the appointment of Brenda J. Thames, EdD to the Hollingsworth Funds Board of Directors and the promotion of Tamela Spann to Vice President of Strategic Initiatives. Dr. Thames, Executive Vice President and Provost, Prisma Health-Upstate Health Sciences Center, will add a keen perspective on collaborative efforts aimed at increasing economic mobility. Spann will support the advancement of the organization’s strategy development, relationship building with community partners and grant portfolio management.

“As we continue to invest our social, moral, intellectual, reputational and financial capital in initiatives and organizations that positively impact Greenville, it’s important to add experience and strong leadership to the organization,” said Minor Shaw, board chair. “We are fortunate to welcome Brenda to the board and so excited to have Tamela in her new role as Vice President.”

Dr. Thames joined Greenville Health System, now Prisma Health, in 2007. She provides executive leadership for academics at the hospital and its shared Academic Health Center. Dr. Thames serves on numerous boards and committees representing the voice of health care, particularly from education and workforce perspectives. She received a B.S. degree from Mississippi State University, a master’s degree from Clemson University, and a doctorate degree from Clemson University.

Spann joined Hollingsworth Funds in 2015 as Manager of Strategic Initiatives. With more than twenty-five years of experience in philanthropy, government affairs, community outreach and teaching, she has been instrumental in developing and implementing effective grantmaking strategies to extend the impact of the Foundation’s investments. She serves on various boards and committees promoting southern philanthropy, community economic development in underserved communities, and nonprofit organizational capacity building. Spann earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg and a master’s degree in secondary education from Converse College.
