Greenville Triumph SC Fields Boys And Girls Upstate Youth Academy Cup Teams For 2021 National USL Competition

(Greenville, SC) May 24, 2021 – The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club today announced it is sending boys and girls all-star soccer players from across the Upstate to participate in the 2021 USL Academy Cup, a new initiative taking place at the Hillsborough County Tournament SportsPlex in Tampa Bay, Florida, over the Memorial Day Weekend May 28-31.

The Triumph invited athletes from soccer clubs and organizations in Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson counties to field a U-13 boys team and a U-17 girls team to represent the Upstate in its first-ever USL Academy Cup. The program provides these young athletes a glimpse into the professional soccer world, including coaching from Triumph staff, high-profile national exposure, and the opportunity to represent the Upstate and the Triumph at an elite event. Travel and uniforms for the players are paid for by the Triumph and its sponsors.

“Soccer clubs and organizations across the Upstate are developing and nurturing an immense amount of youth talent. We are thrilled to build a team of local all-stars to represent the Upstate in this tournament,” said Rick Wright, Director of Technical Alliances and Community Development for the Triumph. “It is a great opportunity for these players to get exposure on this scale by competing against elite players from across the country. But more than that, it’s an incredible privilege to coach and support these gifted athletes.”

The USL Academy Cup event features a World Cup-style schedule in which each age division will be separated into groups of four and play each team in their group once. The top two teams from each division will advance to the final. The Triumph Academy Cup teams will begin play on May 28, with the boys taking on Tampa Bay United in their first match and the girls kicking off against South Georgia Tormenta FC.
