Greenville Revitalization Corporation Receives $150,000 Grant from South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism
Greenville, S.C. — Greenville Revitalization Corporation (GRC) received a $150,000 grant from the South Carolina Department of Parks Recreation and Tourism (SCPRT) for the Greenville Textile Heritage Park in the Monaghan Mill community.
The grant was received largely because of the support of South Carolina Rep. Chandra Dillard, who championed the project and urged SCPRT to provide the funding.
Speaking for GRC, Board Chairman Sean Hartness stated, “Chandra’s work on behalf of GRC and this park was invaluable. She helped us get the attention of SCPRT and guided the funding through the budget process. We cannot thank her enough for her continued support of our efforts to bring economic opportunity back to the Textile Crescent and to improve the Monaghan Mill community.
Hartness continued, “This grant will give GRC a major boost with the development of the Greenville Textile Heritage Park. The public should see significant progress in the coming year.”
GRC has completed a parking lot and a children’s playground thanks to funding from John I. Smith Charities, the Graham Foundation, TD Charitable Foundation, the Jolley Foundation, Wells Fargo and others. The second phase of the park, which will include a Mill Walk, will begin development in early 2019.
Rep. Dillard stated, “It was a pleasure to work with GRC to secure this grant. This project will turn a blighted area into a community centerpiece by providing needed green space where children and families can flourish. We will also share Greenville’s rich textile history with all visitors.”
When completed, the park will contain walking trails with alcoves dedicated to historic mills throughout Greenville County; an event shelter; an open recreation area; wildflowers and a neighborhood garden; and an outdoor classroom to study the natural wildlife and foliage of the area. Any organizations or individuals interested in donating or volunteering toward the project can contact Douglas Dent, GRC CEO at (864) 242-9801 ext. 122.
