Greenville, SC. February 4, 2019 The Board of Directors of Greenville Literacy Association is pleased to announce the appointment of John Jaraczewski as the organization’s Executive Director. Greenville Literacy Association is a nonprofit dedicated to increasing the literacy and employability of the citizens of Greenville County.
“I am excited to have John join Greenville Literacy Association and confident that he will be an outstanding leader for our organization,” says Board Chair Ashlee Tolbert. “His understanding of non-profit leadership, education, and his talent for building community and business relationships will help GLA continue to fulfill its mission to enrich our community by increasing the literacy and employability of our citizens.”
John is a passionate advocate for access to quality education and its critical role in the future success of students and the greater community. Jaraczewski comes to Greenville Literacy Association having served as Assistant Chancellor, University Advancement, at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside since 2012. Leading the external relations initiatives of the University, John was critical in engaging a broad group of internal and external stakeholders to advance the educational needs of students as well as the cultural, civic and economic vitality of the greater region. Key outcomes of John’s work included development of the Guttormsen Family Literacy Lab, establishment of the largest single scholarship fund to address unmet financial need as well as industry partnerships such as the newly established SC Johnson Integrated Science Laboratory.
In addition to his work in higher education, John brings experience in public affairs, corporate relations, and fund development. Jaraczewski served as the first Executive Director of the Essendant Corporate Foundation in Deerfield, Illinois. Prior to that, John worked as Manager of Global Citizenship at Abbott, a major healthcare firm located in the greater Chicagoland area where he managed the company’s award-winning employee giving campaign as well as k-12 science education initiatives. Jaraczewski holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Bachelor of Science Degree from Illinois State University and was recently granted Honorary Alumni Status at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside by its Chancellor, Dr. Debbie Ford. John resides in Greenville with his wife, Wanda and their two children Liliana (18) and John (13).
Greenville Literacy Association (GLA) has served Greenville, South Carolina, and surrounding areas for over 50 years. GLA is the largest community-based adult literacy program in South Carolina and is one of the most highly developed in the nation. GLA recruits and trains community volunteers to provide instruction for adults who need help with basic education, GED studies, WIN test preparation, and English as a Second Language (ESL). The organization operates three fully-equipped and staffed learning centers across Greenville County and assists church and neighborhood literacy programs near these centers.
