SPARTANBURG, S.C. (February 16, 2022) - In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, the Converse College for Women will host the 2022 Women’s Leadership Speaker Series with keynote speaker, Dr. Emerald Archer, and featured alumni speaker, Miya Walker, class of 2012. Held on the Converse University campus in Spartanburg, the event will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Zimmerli Performance Center’s Twichell Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public; a live stream will not be available. All audience members are expected to follow Converse University COVID-19 campus protocol, including mask-wearing regardless of vaccination status.


Dr. Emerald Archer is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for the Advancement of Women at Mount Saint Mary’s University, Los Angeles, CA. She also serves as Executive Director of the Women’s College Coalition. She has dedicated her career to studying questions related to gender equity and the representation of women in non-traditional domains such as the United States military. Archer has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, chapters in research anthologies, and is the author of Women, Warfare and Representation: American Servicewomen in the Twentieth Century (Bloomsbury, 2017). She serves on the board of directors for the Foundation for Women Warriors and holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

For almost a decade, Miya Walker has worked with high school students across the United States to ensure a successful academic and social transition to college. Her career in undergraduate admission began at her Alma Mater, Converse University. Since then, Walker has served in several admission positions at Miami University (Oxford, OH) and currently Emory University (Atlanta, GA) as Senior Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Admission. Her goal is to create a supportive and transparent environment that allows students and their advocates to thrive in the admission and financial aid process. An accomplished higher education professional, Walker was chosen as a 2015 National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) Emerging Leader and has led education workshops in various cities all over the United States. She serves in leadership roles for the Converse University Alumni Board Association and the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC). In addition to higher education, Walker has a genuine passion for local and state government matters, specifically how government policies and laws affect the daily lives of local constituents. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Converse University and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration degree from the School of Public & International Affairs at The University of Georgia.

The Converse College for Women, an empowering living-learning community at Converse University, hosts the Women’s Leadership Speaker Series each spring. The Women’s Leadership Speaker Series expands Converse College for Women’s focus on mentorship, service, and leadership through community events and engaging programming. By bringing distinguished speakers to campus to connect with current students across Converse University and the Spartanburg community, this series creates opportunities for powerful dialogue and knowledge sharing regarding women’s leadership and gender equity.
