Oryza Astari, a 2016 Furman politics and international affairs and philosophy graduate, is among a select group of graduate students to receive the prestigious Harold W. Rosenthal Fellowship in International Relations this year.
Established in 1977 in memory of Rosenthal, the Fellowship was created to expose young scholars of foreign affairs to the inner workings of Congress, the U.S. Department of State and other agencies of the federal government.
Fellows are chosen for their outstanding scholarly achievements, for their character and for their commitment to the study of international affairs. Astari is a candidate at the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University (Washington, D.C.). She is working toward her master’s in international affairs, U.S. foreign policy, and international law and organizations.
The Rosenthal Fellows community helps the next generation of international affairs professionals have the opportunity to work in international affairs offices in the federal government. As a Rosenthal Fellow, Astari will be working this summer at the Department of Labor in the International Labor Affairs Bureau, where she will help prepare the annual International Child Labor & Forced Labor Report.
She served this year as a legislative intern for Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35). Prior to enrolling in the master’s program at George Washington, she was selected as one of 4,100 Teach for America Corps Members, where she worked with Duval County Public Schools (Florida).
At Furman, Astari was part of the Society of Tocqueville Fellows, Furman Creative Collaborative, Student Government Association, Riley Institute Advance Team and Shucker Leadership Institute. A first-generation Indonesian-American, she speaks French and Indonesian. In the fall, she plans to intern at the State Department Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
