Greenville, South Carolina’s Meyer Center for Special Children recently added eight new members to their Board of Directors. FUEL President Warren Griffith was among those selected to help lead the Meyer Center into 2017, the organization’s 63rd year. “It’s quite an honor to be selected to this Board,” says Griffith. “The Meyer Center is truly one of the great organizations in Greenville, having done so much to help special needs children over the past six decades. I look forward to working with the other board members to do great things in the coming year.”
Dr. Leslie Meyer founded the Meyer Center in 1954 with the simple (if revolutionary, at the time) vision that every child, with proper education and therapy, could overcome any setback, regardless of circumstances or perceived limitations. That vision still burns strong today. In the past year, the Meyer Center provided preschool education for 110 students, performed 15,865 therapy sessions, and celebrated 14 graduates. “Thanks to the support of the Greenville community and our dedicated Board,” says Meyer Center Executive Director, Chris Neeley, “the Meyer Center has been able to make a real difference in the lives of countless children over the decades. As we look to the future, we see an opportunity to have even greater reach and impact.”
The role of the Board is to support the Director of the Meyer Center by helping establish new policy, guiding long-term planning, and raising money—always a critical need year in, year out. “As a company,” Griffith says, “FUEL has helped provide strategic marketing assistance to the Meyer Center for the past few years. I look forward to my additional role as a Board Member, to do everything I can to help this terrific organization continue to enrich the lives of children with disabilities so that they can reach their maximum potential.”

The Meyer Center for Special Children
The Meyer Center was founded in 1954 by Dr. Leslie C. Meyer, one of the first pediatric orthopedic surgeons in the Upstate. He believed that children with disabilities could grow and learn, like any child, if given the right environment, education, and therapy. That was 60 years ago: long before the phrase “early intervention” was coined, a time when society saw only limitations for children with disabilities. It is a testament to his vision—as well as to the generosity of the Greenville Community—that the Meyer Center has been able to help so many wonderful children over the years. The Meyer Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), is a United Way partner agency, and is a charter school for qualifying children age 3 and above in Greenville County.
