12th annual event to feed Upstate’s homeless and impoverished
SPARTANBURG, SC (October 22, 2018) – Thanksgiving will be a little brighter for the Upstate’s homeless and impoverished this year as they enjoy turkey and side dishes prepared at the 12th Annual Ellis & Bradley Turkey Fry for Miracle Hill Ministries. The event will be held November 20, 2018 and is South Carolina’s largest turkey fry, with plans to fry and smoke more than 500 turkeys.
“This event is a labor of love as 200 volunteers come together to provide one of the most basic human needs,” said Chelsia Spivey, Events Coordinator for Miracle Hill Ministries.
In addition to feeding the guests living in Miracle Hill’s nine shelters, the Turkey Fry will also benefit impoverished families in Spartanburg. “The Bridge at Green Street is partnering with Miracle Hill and the Spartanburg Housing Authority to provide a hot Thanksgiving meal to residents of one of the low-income housing communities,” said Valerie Forsberg, Director of The Bridge. Additionally, overflow Thanksgiving food boxes, some of which may contain uncooked turkeys that have been donated to the Turkey Fry, will be delivered to the SHA for distribution in low-income neighborhoods.
The Upstate community is invited to participate in the Turkey Fry by volunteering, donating turkeys and other items, sponsoring the event, or giving to Miracle Hill’s Feed the Hungry, Feed the Soul campaign. The organization hopes to raise $155,000 to feed and care for those living in Miracle Hill’s homeless shelters and long-term addiction recovery centers.
“We often think about people being hungry around Thanksgiving time, but hunger isn’t limited to one day out of the year. Miracle Hill feeds and cares for people 365 days a year. Our doors never close,” said Spivey.
WSSL 100 morning show hosts, Bill Ellis and Beth Bradley, will broadcast live at the event which will be held at Miracle Hill’s Spartanburg Rescue Mission located at 189 N. Forest St. The first turkey will be dropped into a fryer at 6:30 a.m., and an experienced “Fry Team” will oversee the cooking as it progresses throughout the day. Volunteer opportunities include carving turkeys, cleaning turkeys, chopping vegetables, preparing side dishes, and more. Groups willing to clean at the end of the day are especially needed. Event information, volunteer sign-ups and donation links are available at miraclehill.org/TurkeyFry.
