Converse College’s Alpha Lambda Delta Chapter Wins National Award

Eileen Merberg, Executive Director of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Success, announced that Converse College’s Alpha Lambda Delta Chapter has won the prestigious Order of the Torch Award for their activities during the 2018-19 academic year. This award highlights excellence in programming, internal communications, campus visibility, and overall presentation of their application.

“College students have to juggle many responsibilities including academics, family, work, friends, community service, and participation in campus organizations. Given these reasons, Merberg notes, “it is truly impressive what the winning chapters were able to accomplish this past year.”

Converse is one of only four schools in the nation to receive the Order of the Torch Award from the National Council of Alpha Lambda Delta. Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society and the Order of the Torch Award goes to institutions who do the most outstanding work promoting student academic success during their first year at a college or university.

President Krista Newkirk was excited to learn of this recognition. “We are very honored to receive this coveted award from Alpha Lambda Delta and appreciate that they recognize the hard work and commitment of Converse faculty and staff who always go the extra mile to promote the success of our students.”

Founded in 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta has over a million lifetime members and is present on over 280 campuses nationwide. Alpha Lambda Delta’s mission is to “encourage superior academic achievement, to promote intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning, and to assist students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their unique roles in society.”

Dr. Edna Steele has advised Converse’s Alpha Lambda Delta for fourteen years and is elated by this accolade. “We have an amazing group of students who took a leap of faith and worked hard to make this happen,” she said.
