Converse College Announces New Master of Management in Professional Leadership
Courses for the new master’s degree program begin in fall 2020

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 16, 2020) – Converse College announces the Master of Management in Professional Leadership (MIM), a 30-hour master’s degree program which will begin in fall 2020. This versatile program is designed for working professionals and will focus on the application of leadership in a variety of fields. Classes are a hybrid of in-person and online, and may be taken on the Converse campus in Spartanburg or at Converse’s alternate location at the University Center of Greenville (UCG). Classes are designed with a cohort model so students work with their peers throughout the whole program, which provides strong support and community.

The Master’s in Professional Leadership provides a comprehensive grounding in professional leadership development with potential for graduates to advance to Converse’s doctoral degree program (EdD) in Professional Leadership. The EdD launched in fall 2019 and has been a popular program for working professionals in the Upstate of South Carolina.

“The Master’s in Professional Leadership is for those in a broad range of professional roles who are looking to enhance their leadership credentials and advance in their careers,” says Converse President Krista L. Newkirk. “The program is led by our veteran faculty and provides the distinctive Converse education that prepares principled and productive citizens who are capable of creative thinking and problem solving and who are well-prepared for their chosen profession.”

Converse’s competitively priced Master’s in Professional Leadership consists of nine 3-hour classes, plus one 3-hour experiential project/capstone. It begins in the fall of each academic year and coursework takes place over five semesters (Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring) of six credit hours per academic semester. For each semester, courses will be paired to focus on a specific topic, and students will attend one in-person class each week in the evening and one online class. The embedded capstone project allows for real-world problem solving based at the individual’s work site, providing opportunities for concrete intellectual and career growth and improvement.

“Students in the program will begin to expand their view of leadership through an examination of multiple contexts while focusing on writing and research skills,” says Dr. Lienne Medford, Converse’s Dean of Education and Graduate Studies. “Converse’s MIM in Professional Leadership will prepare these students to communicate with stakeholders in multiple contexts, and upon completion of the program they will use time management and quantitative skills developed in the program to move forward as well-rounded leaders in the community.”

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, Converse is waiving all standardized testing requirements for graduate students applying for admission to the college’s degree programs. Those students applying to the Master of Management in Professional Leadership for fall 2020 are not required to submit the MAT (Miller Analogies Test) scores. All of Converse’s graduate programs are open to both men and women.

The MIM expands the number of programs Converse offers at University Center of Greenville (UCG) since opening its alternate location there in summer 2018. Converse’s degree offerings at UCG now include the undergraduate Degree Completion Program leading to a BA in Business Administration or BA in Child and Family Studies, the Master in Marriage and Family Therapy, and the Doctorate in Professional Leadership.
