Video is part of CERRA’s strategic plan to address state teacher shortage
The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, & Advancement (CERRA) has released a public service announcement (PSA) designed to recruit students to the teaching profession.
The PSA was created by CERRA’s pre-collegiate staff and filmed and produced by Kendric Lindsey and Rona Neely. Lindsey is a 2018 graduate of Brashier Middle College in Greenville, SC and currently attends the University of South Carolina majoring in Digital Media. Neely is a Pre-Collegiate Program Facilitator at CERRA serving the Upstate Region of South Carolina.
Filming took place in several locations in the Greenville area and features public school students, parents, and education professionals. The PSA is being shared with education stakeholders statewide as part of a larger effort by CERRA to bolster teacher recruitment efforts.
“No matter what grade, level of ability, age, race, family structure, or background, all children deserve a prepared, purposeful, and passionate teacher in the classroom. This video is summoning those who are passionate about the children of South Carolina, people who want to make a difference in the lives of our students,” stated Neely.
"One of CERRA’s strategic goals is to ensure the teacher supply needs of South Carolina public school districts are met. Recent projection studies and trends, however, indicate a teacher shortage of vast proportions is on the horizon. According to the American Association for Employment in Education (2017), there is a national shortage of teachers, and the deficit is directly attributed to the consistent decline of students majoring in education. Consequently, the supply of teachers has diminished while the demand has surged," notes Marcella Wine-Snyder, CERRA's Director of Pre-Collegiate Programs.
In South Carolina, specifically, CERRA’s Annual Educator Supply and Demand Report (2018) corroborates this challenge and the quandary in which the state finds itself.
