Anna Romano, a Human Services major at Greenville Technical College (GTC), has been named a 2023 Christopher A. Calhoun Scholar and will receive a $4,000 scholarship from the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society to continue her studies.
Romano will graduate from the Human Services program at GTC on May 5, earning a cumulative GPA of 3.78. She has served as an active member of PTK, a volunteer with United Ministries, and a peer support leader in the GTC counseling center. She plans to transfer her credits and pursue a bachelor’s degree in Human Services at Lander University, with hopes to remain in Greenville after completion and connect people with affordable housing and mental health resources.
Romano was previously named a 2023 Coca-Cola Academic Team Silver Scholar and received a $1,250 scholarship. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 gold, 50 silver, and 50 bronze scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships awarded annually.
The Christopher A. Calhoun Transfer Scholarship is awarded annually to South Carolina students with high-ranking scores in the All-USA Academic Team Competition. The All-USA program is widely recognized as the most prestigious academic honor for students seeking an associate degree and recognizes students who extend their college education to better themselves, their schools, and their surrounding communities.
Phi Theta Kappa recognizes and encourages scholarship, leadership, and service among the students in two-year colleges in America. To accomplish this purpose, the group provides opportunities to develop leadership and service, an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas and ideals, stimulation of interest in continued academic excellence, and fellowship.
“Anna Romano has worked very hard as a Greenville Technical College student while strongly contributing on campus and in the community,” said Dr. Larry Miller, vice president of learning and workforce development at GTC. “We know that she will continue to excel as she transfers to complete her education and prepares to enter the workforce.”
