Work on Southern Wesleyan University entrance improvements to begin this fall

CENTRAL, S.C. – Entering and leaving Southern Wesleyan University’s Central campus will soon become safer and easier.

The university’s boulevard project involves adding a turning lane on S.C. Highway 93 while a portion of Clayton Street will become a divided roadway from the highway intersection to a point between Fernway Drive and Perimeter Road beside the P.B. Wood Golf Driving Range/Practice Facility.

While the new entrance to Southern Wesleyan will enhance the appearance of the campus to visitors, Mark Reeves, Southern Wesleyan University’s vice president for finance and auxiliary services, says that the improvements will also make entering and leaving the campus much safer.

“This has been a top priority project as campus traffic has become exponentially busier due to the University’s contagious generosity with the community, and expansion in athletics and events at the growing venues nearby,” said Dr. Todd Voss, Southern Wesleyan University president.

Southern Wesleyan approved plans presented by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) July 18. Work has already begun on relocating utility lines at the site. According to SCDOT, work on the intersection is scheduled to begin in the fall and may take approximately one year to complete.

Prior to construction, the university will notify the public about detours and road closures on www.swu.edu and in the local news media.

“When my daughter attended Southern Wesleyan more than a decade ago, my first thought as a parent of a SWU college student was how helpful and safe a boulevard at this location would be. This dream has become a reality and what a difference this improvement will make,” Voss added.

Southern Wesleyan University is a Christ-centered, student-focused, faith-filled community that offers inventive learning experiences. The university endeavors to prepare its students to be dedicated scholars and servant-leaders who impact the world for Christ. At the same time, it’s Southern Wesleyan’s desire to practice contagious generosity within the surrounding community. For details about degree programs, go online to swu.edu.
