Clemson earns national award for inclusive excellence

CLEMSON — Clemson University is a recipient of INSIGHT into Diversity magazine’s 2017 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award. The national honor goes to U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate inclusive excellence.

Clemson University put together programs and initiatives that address the needs and concerns of people of different races, cultures, abilities, sexual orientation and backgrounds. They include:

INSIGHT into Diversity started naming HEED Award recipients in 2012. This is the first time Clemson received the prestigious award.

“The HEED Award application process examines the recruitment and retention of students and employees and best practices for both continued leadership support for diversity and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT into Diversity. “Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus.”

Clemson President James P. Clements said the university is making strong progress in the area of inclusion.

“This prestigious award is reflective of the hard work being done by many people to make the university a welcoming and inclusive place for all members of the Clemson family, and we are proud to be recognized by INSIGHT into Diversity in this manner,” Clements said.

Lee Gill, chief diversity officer and special assistant to the president for inclusive excellence at Clemson, said the HEED Award speaks directly to the foundation of an institution’s diversity initiatives.

“In other words, it states that Clemson has in place the infrastructure and best practices to continue to move the university forward with inclusive excellence,” Gill said.

INSIGHT into Diversity magazine is the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. Clemson and 79 other HEED Award recipients will be featured in the magazine’s November 2017 issue.
