The 39th Annual Big Thursday event presented by D&D Motors is Nov. 1 at Fairview Baptist Church, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Benefiting Greer Community Ministries (GCM), the fundraiser features crafts, baked goods, frozen casseroles, a barbecue lunch, and a hot dog supper.
A silent auction with items donated from local individuals and businesses will be in the Fairview ROC from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. A live auction will begin at 7 p.m. with Jerry Bruce and his team. The Book Nook returns this year with Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd taking over the collection of gently used books to sell during the event.
“Big Thursday is exactly what Greer Community Ministries is all about,” said Stephen Smith, GCM executive director. “The community donates their time, crafts, and baked goods for us to sell and then the community comes back to support the event by purchasing those items as well as lunch and dinner.”
For 39 years, Big Thursday has generated needed revenue for GCM’s four programs. Last year’s event garnered $73,000 for the ministry. This helped the food pantry and clothing closet supply emergency food and clothing every four months to those in need in the greater Greer area. The Meals on Wheels program feeds about 300 homebound people Monday through Friday and the Senior Dining program offers food, fellowship, and friendship to about 27 senior adults each week day.
Donations are needed for the event. Please contact Shelley Bierwiler, 877-1937, to donate or volunteer. Baked goods and crafts may be delivered to Fairview Baptist Church’s ROC Oct. 29-31 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Books for the Book Nook may be taken to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 200 Cannon St., Greer, Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
